报告题目: Applications of statistical learning in bioinformatics in big data era
报告人: Prof. Shikui Tu
Shikui Tu is a postdoc at University of Massachusetts Medical School. He received his B.Sc. from School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University in 2006, and Ph.D. from Computer Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. His research interests include machine learning, data mining and applications in bioinformatics. He is working on building statistical models for biological big data.
The biological data is one of the hottest types of big data. Its scale has already reached exabyte (EB), and the velocity of data generation is extremely fast. However, more data does not mean more knowledge. How to extract and integrate biological insights from such complex data which is noisy and from very heterogeneous resources becomes a challenging problem in data science. One direct challenge is interactive data visualization. Our solution is an integrated cloud computing platform: distributed data storage, easy to share and integrate, data-driven interactively connected figures, etc. To uncover the patterns and mechanisms hidden in the data, statistical models were built appropriately according to the biological questions with the help of methods developed in the fields of machine learning, data mining, and so on. The computational results were well consistent with biological experiments and provided insights for further experiments.
